The Palace Hotel opened on 10/02/1875. It was the largest hotel in the western U.S. and the tallest building in San Francisco at the time.

The Palace was badly damaged by the fire following the 1906 earthquake. After considerable debate, the surviving structure was demolished rather than rebuilt.

The new Palace Hotel, built on the site of the original Palace, opened on 12/19/1909.
