Location: 5th/Mission (NW corner).
The San Francisco branch of the United States Mint was built 1869-1874 at 5th/Mission, replacing an earlier San Francisco mint built in 1854. The mint contained $300,000,000 in gold in 1906, one third of the U.S. gold reserve. After the 1906 earthquake employees successfully fought the ensuing fire, and the building was one of very few inside the fire perimeter to survive more or less intact. Mint operations moved in 1937 to a new mint constructed at Hermann/Buchanan. The building is now (in 2026) known as the Old Mint and is owned by the city of San Francisco.
