Location: Powell/Geary (NW corner), facing Union Square.
The two 12-story south wings of the St. Francis Hotel opened on 3/21/1904. A residential wing immediately to the north was under construction when the 1906 earthquake struck. Structurally sound but damaged by the fire, the hotel reopened in late 1907. Construction of the third wing was completed in 1908, and with the addition of a fourth wing in 1913 the hotel covered the entire block of Powell facing Union Square (Geary to Post). A 32-story high-rise addition behind the original wings opened in 1971.
