To date I have found the 1865 (MN), 1870, 1875 (MN) and 1880 census records for the family of my great-great-grandfather Peder Pederson Høgheim [Highum] (1818-1882) and his wife Guri Bjønetun Høgheim [Highum] (1821-1898), called Brita. Peder and Guri were born in Norway and emigrated in 1854 with their Norwegian-born sons Mons/Truls/Peder; Truls died en route. They went first to WI, then settled in Fillmore County MN (Arendahl Township) in 1860.
All seven of Peder and Guri's living children lived with them in 1865. The 1870 census identifies two households in adjacent listings: six children still live with their parents, while the eldest son Mons lives with his wife Brita and their baby daughter Thea. Guri is identified as Julia in 1865/1870/1875 but as Gurine in 1880; Julia is an Americanization of Guri, so my grandmother Bertha Julia Highum Ness (called Julia) must be named after her. All are listed with surname Peterson in 1865/1870, Pederson in 1875, and Highum in 1880; my Anders Ness page discusses Norwegian naming issues.
