International Composers Competition

Application form

Eligibility

  • Applicants may of any nationality.
  • Applicants may be of any age.

Compositions

  • Works limited to 1-4 players chosen from Earplay's ensemble:
    • flute/piccolo/alto flute
    • clarinet/bass clarinet
    • piano
    • violin
    • viola
    • cello
  • Works may include electronics.
  • Works may be or any duration (8-15 minutes preferred)
  • Any number of pieces may be submitted.

Award

  • Cash prize: $1,000.
  • Performance by Earplay during the 2011-12 season.
  • The winner will be announced in July 2011.
  • All entries will be considered for performance.

Deadline

  • Applications must be postmarked by March 31, 2011

Application

  • Scores and recordings (strongly recommended) must be submitted anonymously. All identification of the composer, and his/her professional or academic affiliation must be removed .
  • A completed application form, enclosed in an envelope.
  • Include a $25 application* fee per score in the form of cash or payment through PayPal.
  • For materials to be returned, please enclose a stamped self-addressed envelope (stamped only, no metered postage) International submissions cannot be returned.

* Competition fees are directed towards the performance of the winning composition. The judges reserve the right to not award a prize if no composition is deemed prize-worthy. Earplay has awarded a prize every year.

Wayne Peterson Prize

NO COMPETITION IN 2010-11

for American Composers

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be citizens of the United States or legal residents of the U.S. or its territories.
  • Applicants must be 40 years old or younger on January 1, 2005.
  • Previous winners of the Wayne Peterson Prize are not eligible.

Compositions

  • Works may be scored for 3-6 players chosen from flute/piccolo/alto flute, clarinet/bass clarinet, percussion (1 player), piano, viola, violin, cello.
  • Duration: 10-16 minutes.
  • The composition must have been written within five years of January 1, 2005.
  • The composition may not have been previously awarded a national or international prize.
  • Previously performed works are eligible.
  • Works including electronics are eligible.

Award

  • Cash prize: $3,500
  • Performance by Earplay NO COMPETITION

  • Applications must be post marked by NO COMPETITION

  • 2 scores and 2 recordings (if available) must be submitted anonymously, identified by a pseudonym. All identification of the composer, and his/her professional or academic affiliation must be removed .
  • A completed application form, enclosed in an envelope with only the pseudonym on the outside, must be included.
  • Include a $25 application fee in the form of a check or money order payable to Earplay.
  • For materials to be returned, please enclose a stamped self-addressed envelope.
  • Applicants may submit only one score.
  • In lieu of an application form, you may send a sealed envelope (with the pseudonym on the outside) which contains the composer's name, address, e-mail address, telephone number, and date and place of birth; and composition title, year of completion, and duration.

Earplay, in joint sponsorship with the College of Creative Arts at San Francisco State University, is pleased to announce the seventh Wayne Peterson Prize in Music Composition. The Award consists of a $3,500 cash prize and a public performance by Earplay during the 2004-2005 season.

To be eligible, composers must be 40 years old or younger (as of January 1, 2005) and U.S. citizens or legal residents of the U.S. or its Territories. Submissions must be anonymous (please use a pseudonym on the score) and consist of a single 10-16-minute composition for 3-6 players chosen from: flute/piccolo/alto flute, clarinet/bass clarinet, percussion (one player), piano, violin, viola, cello. The use of pre-recorded electronics is acceptable.

The composition (1) must have been written within five years prior to January 1, 2005, (2) must not have been awarded a national or international prize, and (3) may have been previously performed. Former winners of the Peterson Prize are not eligible to compete. Applicants should send two bound copies of the score, two CD recordings (if available), and a stamped, self-addressed envelope for return of materials, plus a completed application form to: Wayne Peterson Prize, Earplay, P.O. Box 192125, San Francisco, CA 94119. In lieu of an application form, you may send a sealed envelope (with the pseudonym on the outside) which contains the composer's name, address, e-mail address, telephone number, and date and place of birth; and composition title, year of completion, and duration.

The submission deadline is January 31, 2005 (postmark date). An entry fee of $25.00 in the form of a check or money order made out to Earplay and drawn on a U.S. bank must accompany the entry. The winner will be announced in May 2005 and will be expected to provide a complete set of parts no later than September 1, 2005.
