File: /home/photo/hws/readme.txt Modified: 09/07/21 Created: 11/05/14 Subject: HWS slide inventory and scanning notes. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ SAN got roughly 410 Stolmack family slides from MKS in October 2014; they fit in 6.15 x 12 x 3.5 shoebox. They were not well organized, so SAN organized them before scanning, dating by slide mounts. Many were in original mailing boxes, but some were in one larger box. Many of the mailing boxes have mailing dates, but the slide dates are not necessarily consistent, making identification by label or mailing date unreliable. Boxes were clearly reused, and in many cases relabeled. 11/04-05/14: Scanned. Slides are very dirty, scratched; should have used Digital ICE4 setting but did not until after scanning the first 300 or so. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Mount dating: cf. http://www.historicphotoarchive.com/index.html Anscocolor: 1940s Anscochrome: 1950s or later Kodachrome: 4/39 to 5/49 Kodachrome Transparency w/stamped (embossed) number 5/49 to 5/52 Kodachrome Transparency w/inked number 5/52 to 8/55 Kodachrome Transparency processed by Kodak w/inked number 8/55 to 7/57 Kodachrome Transparency processed by Kodak w/inked number and stamped date 5/58 to 7/58 Kodachrome Transparency w/yellow corner 5/58 to 9/61 Kodachrome Transparency processed by Technicolor gray mount ca. 1958 After 9/61: imprinted dates. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Boxes as received by Steve: Mailing addresses: Sutter [12/1945]: 653 Sutter Street / SF 2, CA Carl [9/1946]: 92 Carl Street / SF 17, CA Masefield [1/1949 - 1/1953]: 538 Masefield Drive / Concord, CA Radnor [9/61]: 56 Radnor Road / Oakland CA / HI4-6892 [Some of the labels on HWS' storage boxes are simply wrong, and some of MKS' written dates on slide mounts are wrong too.] Kodaslide box 4.125 x 2.125 x .5: 5 slides written on box: Youngstown & Chicago / One of LA / Minnie & Molly in SF/ Guam mailed: 9/10/46 to Carl 3 Kodachrome undated, 2 Ansco color undated [4 others from 1973 moved to later box] Kodaslide box 4.125 x 2.125 x .5: written on box: Guam / Chicago 1st trip developed: 11/12/54 [year hard to read] mounts: Kodachrome [5] [presumably Guam] Kodachrome Transparency [8] Ansco Color [4] Kodaslide box 4.125 x 2.125 x .5: 12 slides mounts: Kodachrome Transparency, embossed numbers mailed: 8/25/49 to Masefield written on box: 1948 Molly pregnant / 1949 Painted desert & Grand Canyon Kodaslide box 4.125 x 2.125 x .5: written on box: Bill & Molly / Minnie & Molly / before children [by MKS] Chicago / Alan as a baby / Before children / Santa Cruz [by HWS] mounts: Ansco Color [4] writing on mounts dates 1946-1947 Kodachrome [6] writing Winter 44 Golden Gate Park [spectacular!] Kodachrome Transparency [4] including Alan as baby Kodaslide box 4 x 2.75 x .5: 15 slides mounts: Kodachrome Transparency, unnumbered some stamped 9305-M1 but others not mailed: 4/10/52 to Masefield written on box: 1949 Trip to Chicago and Youngstown [but one slide inside says Spring 1945 Mt.
