Ancient Runes

10:30 EST | From time to time there are requests for ancient papers. Some of these papers are already available in machine readable form, but some are not. When there is some expressed interest, and some original source files for the documents are available, we typically will typeset them into a more modern form, and then present them here.

Why Postscript Sucks

In 1991 Postscript was a relatively new thing, and there was not yet any such thing as PDF. This paper discusses, and criticizes, many of the aspects of Postscript that were regarded as unfortunate in some of our earlier projects using it. I will be adding a parallel-ogue critique of the paper, but on first re-reading, many of the points seem to have stood the test of time reasonably well.

TeX in a Commercial Environment

In the middle 1980s we started to use TeX to perform some of the typesetting tasks associated with the production of TVGuide. At the 1987 Annual Conference of the TeX User's Group, a paper was presented which discussed these developments. This is a copy of one of the files produced in developing that paper. As of now I cannot guarantee that this is the `final' version, but it seems to be nearly final, if not explicitly the last.

About Mind/Matter

* mind/matter started in 1963 as SONAMCO. Most of the principals have been, at various times, members of the faculty of MIT's Sloan School or of the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School. After several stages of evolution and corporate spin-offs it has become mind/matter.
