Autumn Melody (1998) by Fredrik Fahlman
for flute, violin, cello, and piano
US premiere; 2005 Earplay Donald Aird Composers Competition winner
The melancholy of autumn — a sense of isolation — skies thick with heavy clouds — a gentle wind, not yet winter cold — nature is lying down to sleep and perhaps, dream through the winter. The piece is composed around a simple premise: melody and accompaniment, where pre-determined and free structures play against each other.
