The program features a Korean sensibility in the poetic qualities of song and includes works by notable composers Isang Yun and Earl Kim as well as Hi Kyung Kim and Hyo-shin Na who both reside in the Bay Area. The world premiere (Earplay commission) of Ocean/Shore 2, for clarinet and string trio by Hyo-shin Na uses modern western instruments to imply a Korean perspective of the California coast. Peter Josheff, Terrie Baune (violin), Kurt Rohde (viola) and Dan Reiter (cello) perform. Espace I for cello and piano by Isang Yun, perhaps Korea's best-known composer outside of Korea, features the timbers of the cello's high range and suggests a French sensibility. Exceptional artistry of Thalia Moore (cello) and Karen Rosenak's (piano) elegant playing join together for this surprisingly impressionistic piece. Scenes from a Movie, Part 1, the Seventh Dream for soprano, baritone and piano trio by Korean-American Earl Kim, who is known for his sensitive setting of text. The venerable composer lived in the Bay Area before his illustrious career at Harvard. Ki Yeon Cho (soprano) and Hugh Russell (baritone) sing the expressive setting of Ranier Maria Rilke's text with subtle and shaded accompaniment with Mary Chun conducting. Die Insel Schwimmt (The Island Floats), for percussion and piano based upon the poem by the same title will be performed by Karen Rosenak (piano) and Tim Dent (percussion). The concert will conclude with At the Edge of the Ocean for mixed septet by Hi Kyung Kim. This intense and mysterious piece was originally written for Yo Yo Ma and the Chamber Music Society of Minnesota for the special project Hun Qjao (Bridge of Souls) commemorating WWII. Mary Chun conducts. Composers Hyo-shin Na and Hi Kyung Kim will be present discuss their work at a pre-concert talk at 7:15 PM. Conducted by Mary Chun, the Earplay ensemble is Terrie Baune, Tod Brody, Peter Josheff Thalia Moore, Ellen Ruth Rose, and Karen Rosenak.
