[presumably John Henry], Hermann Horstmann [Henry's brother's kids (Christopher?)]. --- Weidner CA page http://weidnerca.com/blog/charles-weidner/ Information presumably from Rick Weidner (great grandson of Charles / grandson of Edwin / son of Edwin Jr.), principal of Weidner CA. House of Signs founded in Sacramento ca. 1955 (business 60 years old ca. 2015) by 1955 newlyweds Ed and Char Weidner; presumably that's Edwin Weidner Jr. b. 1930 per 1940 census. Several facts in this short bio are questionable: In 1880, 14 year old Charles Weidner left his home in Germany to come to the United States... [1900 census says 1887] He chose many of his images to be published as post cards that he had printed at the German printing press, Geoggel. [Goeggel was originally German, but he lived in SF during all the time he was associated with Weidner. He was never a printer. He was a publisher in name only; presumably he provided capital during the Goeggel & Weidner period. Weidner's early cards, including Goeggel & Weidner cards, were printed by Louis Glaser (Leipzig) or [FIX_ME other German printer].] Even though printing in Germany was banned following World War I, Weidner continued to print his own cards. [Weidner surely was out of the business of publishing his own cards by 1915 (PPIE), possibly as early as 1910. He never "printed" his own cards, if we distinguish printer vs. publisher.] From those, we can trace his travels throughout California, as far north as Oregon, and south to Catalina Island. [The numbered cards do not include any from Oregon, all are from CA.] While on one of his many expeditions, the 1906 San Francisco earthquake struck. Charles promptly returned home to capture the devastating and breathtaking images of the quake's affect on the city by the bay. [It would be great to know whether this is true!] --- Random Weidner pix: Four pix of naval vessels in SF Bay (ca. 1908-1911): https://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/OnlineLibrary/photos/arttopic/photgphr/photog-w/c-weidnr.htm Re postcards with Weidner pix: http://www.tpa-project.info/TPA_15_5.pdf EBay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1906-ORIGINAL-CHARLES-WEIDNER-PHOTO-SAN-FRANCISCO-REFUGEE-CAMP-CHILDREN-COTTAGES-/261547353301 LoC (Mendocino tribe native american): https://www.loc.gov/item/2016653234/ --- City directories (chronological): Langley 1880 p. 456: https://archive.org/details/langleyssanfranc1880sanf/page/456 Horstmann Henry, propr Precita Valley House, SW cor Thirtieth and Mission Langley 1890: Wendlin Weidner beer bottler but no Charles/Carl/Karl Weidner. p. 660: Horstmann Henry, liquor saloon, SW cor Thirtieth and Mission, r. 7 Thirtieth. Weidner, 1900 [printed below caption] --- http://www.metropostcard.com/publishersw.html: Charles Weidner 1903-1940 San Francisco, CA Wiedner had been a commercial photographer since the 1890s. He first entered the postcard business with the investor William Goeggel in 1903. Together they published 111 numbered cards as Goeggel & Weidner, but by 1904 Weidner was issuing cards under his name alone. Because of reprints cards with the same images can be found under both names. Weidner became an important publisher producing almost 700 postcards in a wide variety of methods including tinted halftones under the trade name Auto-Chrome. There are also Wiedner cards in tinted collotype that were printed in Germany by Louis Glazer, and their set of Panama-Pacific Expo cards were printed by the Albertype Company. Cyanotypes and real photo postcards were also produced. With the exception of a few black & white cards, his postcard publishing ended during World War One with the closing of the German print houses. Weidner continued to work as a staff photographer for newspapers and magazines. --- Unresolved questions: 4/18/1906: weidnerca.com bio says Weidner was out of town but returned soon, are the 4/18-19/1906 fire postcards taken by others but published by him? AFAIK Weidner postcard photos were all by Weidner. Bear photo (earthquake era pix, including relief camps): unrelated to Weider, I presume? Chron 18951102: Henry H.D.
