Phelan Building

Location: Market/O'Farrell, NW corner (at Grant).

The first Phelan Building was a flatiron-shaped 6-story building built in 1881 by James Phelan (co-founder of the Mutual Savings Bank) on the triangular lot at Market/O'Farrell/Grant. The building was badly damaged in the 4/18/1906 earthquake/fire and dynamited on 4/20/1906. Phelan's son James D. Phelan (mayor of San Francisco 1897-1902, US senator 1915-1921) built a new Phelan Building on the same site in 1907-1908, as advertised in a beautiful brochure.
