Mills Building

Location: 220 Montgomery (Montgomery/Bush, NE corner).

D.O. Mills, president of the Bank of California, commissioned the Mills Building, completed in 1892. The 10-story steel-frame building designed by Burnham and Root was San Francisco's second skyscraper (after the 1890 Chronicle Building). It survived the 1906 earthquake but was burnt out by the fire, then restored by architect Willis Polk in 1907. A 22-story tower was added in 1932.
