Merchants Exchange

Location: 465 California (south side, between Montgomery/Leidesdorff).

The first Merchants Exchange was a three-story brick building on Battery St. built in 1851 (first two images below). Its successor was a three-story building with a tower on the south side of California at Montgomery, completed in 1867 (next two images, Houseworth and Watkins stereograms). The third Merchants Exchange, a 12-story skyscraper designed by Burnham and Polk, replaced it in 1904 on the same site. After it sustained heavy damage from the 1906 earthquake and fire, it was rebuilt/redesigned by Polk and Julia Morgan. The building now houses the Merchants Exchange Club and the Julia Morgan Ballroom.
