~photo/san/2012/121031/readme.txt 11/01/12 Notes on 10/31/12 Halloween pictures at Matt Kahn's [Cf. earlier versions from 2009, 2010.] ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Dep. home ca. 5:15. Traffic on 280 after Sand Hill, very slow on Junipero Serra due to PG&E work, arrived later than expected, ca. 6:15, near dusk but nice low light situation before full darkness. Cold, nasty, misty on drive up, but dry on arrival and stayed that way until departure ca. 8:15, then light rain from Sand Hill north on return trip. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Olympus (3MP, p001 to p199; ca. 190 pix before editing): ISO 100, auto white balance. Most pix with night mode, -2.0, autofocus; generally works well, fast and simple. Some pix in ASM mode M, f8. [Manual focus: hold OK, left to select MF, up/down to focus, OK.] Previously noted: Focus on autofocus Olympus pix is typically past surface of pumpkin. but didn't really notice it this time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Canon S5IS (8MP, p201 ff., ca. 60 pix before editing): Auto white balance, L format, highest quality compression (S), ISO 100. M mode. f8 mostly (for best depth of field), wider for very dark pieces (due to 16" max exposure) Exposures 2.5" to 16", generally ca. -0.7 from indicated exposure Manual focus mostly (with distance estimated), some autofocus; focus very difficult in both cases. Did not use 2" timer (push single shot/self timer button repeatedly to select, then hit set). ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Less low-angle shooting, favoring my gimpy back. Newer tripod is flakey, one leg does not maintain set position solidly. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Prep: Charge batteries (5 sets, but never needed any backups). Clean lenses. Brought: 2 cameras w/batteries 2 tripods (used 1) Flashlight (useful!) ------------------------------------------------------------------------
